Do you need permission to install an electric car charger?

Planning permission is not usually needed for a wall-mounted EV charge point within the parameters of a property that you own, but there are some criteria. The electrical outlet and casing must not:

  • Exceed 0.2 cubic metres
  • Face onto and be within two metres of a highway
  • Be within a site designated as a scheduled monument
  • Be within the curtilage of a listed building

If you live in a listed building or a conservation area, it’s best to consult your local planning authority before installation.

What are the requirements for EV charger installation in the UK?

Before installation, your installer will do a site visit to assess the area where the charger is to be installed.

They’ll be looking at whether it’s safe and accessible, where your vehicle’s charge point is, the length of the charging cable, and its suitability for connectivity.

Your installer will also inform your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to ensure the main fuse and supply are adequate.

During installation, building regulations will need to be adhered to, to ensure your EV charger installation is safe and meets the electrical standards outlined in Part P of building regulations.

On Checkatrade, you'll only find trades who meet our high standards and pass up to 12 checks.

How long does it take to install an EV charger?

Installing an EV charger normally takes around four hours, but this is just a guide. If the scope of the job is more complex, or unforeseen issues occur, expect it to take longer.

Can an electrician install an electric car charger?

Yes, a qualified electrician with the necessary training can install an electric car charger. This ensures your installation is completed safely and in line with building regulations.

Can I buy an EV charger and install it myself?

While there’s nothing stopping you from installing an EV charger yourself, it isn’t recommended.

Work involving electricity is always best left in the safe hands of a qualified professional.
