What are the different types of boiler?

system boiler

Combi boiler

A combination boiler is the most popular type of boiler for a modern home. It is a compact option that generates heating and hot water, meaning there is no need for a separate hot water tank.

Conventional boiler (heat only)

A conventional boiler, also described as a ‘heat only’ boiler heat up your radiators and connect to a separate tank to generate hot water.

System boiler

System boilers, also described as ‘closed vent’ boilers work in the same way as conventional boilers, except they are slightly different. A system boiler is a modern version and they don’t require a cold water tank – everything is built in.

How to decide on a new boiler

Buying a new boiler can be very daunting and you want to make sure that you have done your research and invest in the right one for you and your property.

A big factor that you should consider is the boiler’s level of energy efficiency. Of course, this is better for the environment in the long run, but it will also save your household money. Eco-friendly models are readily available.

You want your boiler to be value for money. With something so vital to the everyday running of your home, it’s not a good idea to scrimp. It’s true that you get what you pay for and this definitely goes for when shopping for a new boiler.

Also, consider the after-sales support you are going to receive.

You want to make sure that the boiler you decide to invest in comes with a decent warranty and customer support after the sale.

Do your research and go for a boiler brand that offers great customer service and has pages of positive reviews.

Last but definitely not least, make sure you choose a brand that is known for its reliability. Once again it may seem a bit time consuming trawling through reviews, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Best boiler brands

Broken boiler with a common problem

Worcester Bosch

Probably the most well known boiler brand, Worcester Bosch was founded in 1962. It is a reputable British boiler brand that has built a very good reputation for providing good quality, energy-efficient boilers.

Viessman Boilers

Veissman is known for the quality of its components. Unlike Worcester Bosch, they don’t use plastic components in any of their boilers, therefore they are arguably more durable and long-lasting.

Vaillant Boilers

The Valiant group produces products for heating, cooling and hot water. They are one of the leading manufacturers of boilers, heat pumps and heating systems and are definitely one of the industry’s pioneers.

Alpha Boilers

Alpha boilers are known to be reasonably priced and are a relative newcomer to the market in comparison to the other boiler brands. They are an Italian brand and have produced over 7 million boilers.

Most reliable gas boilers

If you weren’t already aware, new legislation means that there will be no new gas boilers after 2025.

This doesn’t mean you need to get rid of or replace your existing boiler either before or after 2025. If you’ve only just purchased it and it’s working, you absolutely do not need to change it.

The government are phasing out gas boilers to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. There are a couple of alternatives that will be used to replace them, which are already being installed in homes across the UK.

  1. Heat pumps – heat pumps use the same technology as a fridge freezer. An electric pump absorbs heat from the air outside and cleverly compresses it to reach a high temperature. This heat will then be transferred all throughout your home.
  2. Hydrogen boilers – hydrogen boilers are yet to be invented, but the plan is to introduce a 20% hydrogen blend into the UKs main gas supply. This won’t happen until 2028 at the earliest.
