Common problems with Velux windows
Velux is a pioneering brand that’s developed energy-efficient, innovative windows, designed to be durable and easy to use. However, sometimes things go wrong, whether it’s a mechanical, electrical, or wear and tear issue.
Let’s look into some of the common problems with Velux windows and what you can do to fix them.
Velux window opening problems
A Velux window that won’t open can be incredibly frustrating, but it could be a simple fix.
1. The seals are too tight
This might sound silly, but if your Velux has been shut for a long time, over winter, for example, it could just be that the seals have formed a tight grip.
Similarly, the internal mechanism for opening and closing the window can become stiff over time.
Fix: Loosen the seals and mechanisms by carefully spraying WD-40 into the gaps around the window. Let it work its magic and then gently try to open the window.
2. The frame has warped
Unfortunately, Velux windows that aren’t properly installed can suffer from warped frames. This happens when the frame has not been properly aligned and fitted to the roof.
You most probably won’t be able to detect this by looking at the frame itself, but the window not opening can indicate an issue with warping.
Fix: For this issue, you’ll need to contact a Velux window specialist to come and inspect the problem.
3. Broken hinges or handles
Perhaps a more obvious issue, but if the hinges or handles are worn or damaged, your Velux window won’t open properly, if at all.
Fix: Issues with broken hinges or handles will need to be tackled by a Velux window specialist.
4. A problem with the electrics
Velux’s electric and remote-controlled windows are not immune to problems. An electrical fault with an electric Velux window could stop it from responding to the remote control or wall switch.
Fix: If you can reach the window, gently pull the handle down to open it. If this manual operation works, it could be that the window has an electrical fault.
Refer to your user manual to reset the controller and run the setup function to make sure it’s properly connected to the window.

Velux window won’t close
A Velux window that won’t close can pose a more imminent issue as your home is neither protected from intruders or the elements.
So what might be the reason why you can’t shut your Velux window?
- The locking mechanism could be faulty or dirty – cleaning or replacing the mechanism will help to fix this
- The handle or hinges might have deteriorated or even broken – order replacement parts through Velux
- The seals could be damaged, stopping your window from closing properly – although this tends to be more common in older windows
- The frame could have become warped by the elements over time, which can make it tricky to shut the Velux
On Velux electric and solar-powered roof windows:
- The rain sensor could be shielded by the window sash and need relocating – an installer can order a wire extension to allow for this
- The remote control or battery could be out of charge or need resetting – refer to your user manual for guidance
Can you manually close an electric Velux window?
If it’s raining and you can’t shut your Velux window, don’t panic – you can manually close your electric Velux window without using the wall switch.
Depending on your window type, there are two ways to do this. Refer to your user manual for instructions, or follow Velux’s online guide.
Common problems with Velux blinds
- Misaligned blinds can often be fixed by gently realigning the blind with the window frame
- Jammed blinds can be remedied by clearing any dirt or debris that’s in the way
- A broken cord or chain that controls the blind’s movement will need to be replaced by a Velux specialist
On a Velux electric blind:
Reset the Velux blind by sliding the reset tab on the underside of the righthand side of the blind and holding for ten seconds.
The blind will then cycle up and down three times, which indicates that the reset function is complete.
