Josh’s journey as a multi-skilled tradesperson

Enthusiastic Josh Scott is having his life transformed as a budding plumbing and heating engineer, thanks to Logic4training.

Josh’s journey as a multi-skilled tradesperson

Starting the journey

Currently a Trainee at Logic4training (a Checkatrade recommended training partner), Josh started his trade journey after deciding that an army career wasn’t for him. After looking at various apprenticeship schemes (inspired by his family) Josh started out as a technician for an a fire and flood restoration company.

At just 19 years of age, Josh has already followed both his dad and brother down the trade career path. His dad Jay has worked as a plumber and heating engineer, and his brother Ryan is a trained gas installer.

Making the move

After working with his dad for a while, Josh realised that a career as a tradesperson was what he wanted. What followed was a bold move to start his own business as a tiler, studying on a local tiling course.

He completed his course and straight away invested in his own tools and van. For his new business, Josh started finding work using a mix of social media and word-of-mouth.

But that switch to a trade career wasn’t the end of Josh’s journey. Having a clear goal to own his own company, Josh started with tiling, but set his sights broader than just one skilled trade.

Winning the competition

After seeing the Logic4training advertisement on Instagram, Josh decided to apply. Following a thorough process, Josh was awarded the winner of a Lifetime of Training package with Logic4training.

The prize starts off with a new entrants’ programme, which will conclude in a Level 2 Plumbing NVQ Diploma and Gas ACS. That gas training course is a requirement for all businesses seeking to join the Gas Safe register.

After that point, the link to Logic4training will continue, as Josh will receive training vouchers every year for the next 10 years. At the speed his trade career is progressing, he can use the training himself, or for upskilling staff if and when he becomes an employer.

Presented by Kevin Budd and Mark Krull from Logic4training, as well as the training, the prize includes a website and 12 month Checkatrade membership. Once completing his gas engineer course, Josh will be set for running his own vetted and approved trade business.

Planning the future

With experience in general site work, Josh wants to train specifically as a plumbing and heating engineer. Neither of these are trades you can learn quickly, but he sees the heating sector as an exciting business opportunity.

In the longer term and having qualified as a certified plumber and gas engineer, Josh has wider ambitions to branch out into heat pumps and possibly electrics. Even further in his trade journey, Josh plans to grow his own building contractor business.

Josh's story to starting out as a trade business is inspiring. There are many ways start out as a trade business, and learning a new trade through accredited courses is a great way to begin.

There are a wide range of courses out there for people who want to train. Whether starting a new business, or gaining new skills, there will be a course that is right for you. A great place to start that journey is with Trade-Up.

Seeking to create an extra 10,000 skilled workers every year, Trade-Up has a range of opportunities through various training providers. That means a chance to retrain, change career path or enter a skilled trade.

Josh is on the path to becoming a ‘multi-skilled’ installer – he started out as a tiler, will soon be a plumbing and gas engineer and has his sights on renewables and electrics.

As he says - “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity Logic4training has given me. I’m interested in learning how to make video content, what makes a good website and all the other bits that go with running a business today – not many people get this level of help and I plan to make the most of it.
