What’s the standard height of a bath?

Although there’s no strict standard bath height in the UK that you must stick to, knowing what bath is best suited for your bathroom is helpful.

What is the standard height of a UK bath?

Most single-ended, freestanding corner baths’ standard height is between 381mm and 550mm (15 and 20 inches or 38cm and 55cm). But most UK baths will sit at the maximum height of 550mm, allowing for around 200 litres.

However, slightly taller or shorter bath heights are available to suit large or smaller bathrooms and your family’s needs.

When you hire a plumber to complete your bathroom renovation (which we always recommend), they will be more focused on finding a bath that suits the design and layout of your bathroom rather than fitting a tub of a standard height.

Is 600mm too high for a bath?

There is no set rule for your bath height, although you don’t want a bath so deep that you need a ladder to get in and out – this would be a pool!

If you enjoy a lovely deep soak, you can find taller at around 600mm tall. Any bath between 500mm and 600mm is comfortable for most adults.

Bathtubs with some extra depth include corner baths, whirlpool baths and freestanding garden tubs like oval baths or 19th-century French roll-top bateau-style tubs.

How do I know which bath height to choose?

When you choose a bath in the UK, the standard bath height usually stays the same regardless of the width or height of a tub. So, this isn’t something you typically need to think about.

But, if you have young children in your home or older adults who might struggle to get in and out of the bath, you might want to choose a bath on the shallower side.

If your bath is going flush against a wall, check if any features or windows in the room might need working around. If so, you can try small alcove baths, a drop-in bathtub or a freestanding bath, as they can come in alternative sizes.
