Factors that affect granite worktop costs

Granite is a premium material - it tends to sit at the higher end of the price bracket for worktops. Having said that, several variables influence the cost of granite worktops.

The type of granite you choose

The quality and colour of granite you select will influence the price you pay.

  • Standard granite is more affordable yet still offers a timeless aesthetic

  • Premium granite allows you the pick of rare colours and patterns, but you'll pay more per square metre

Worktop size and thickness

As you might imagine, the thickness and length of your desired worktop will affect the overall cost. As a general rule, the thicker the slab, the higher the cost of your granite worktops.

  • 20mm: Provides a versatile option as it's lighter and easier to integrate into your kitchen designs

  • 30mm: This is the industry standard thickness for granite worktops

  • 40mm: Some granite slabs are available in 40mm thickness, but it's not typical

Granite installation costs

Depending on the firm you hire, installation costs may be included in the overall quote for your granite worktops. As a guide:

  • Expect to pay between £270 - £600 per for the supply and installation of granite worktops, with the average being around £435 per

Additional costs

Templating, cutting, and fitting are generally included in the quote. However, some elements will be calculated based on the finishes you choose.

Granite worktop in a modern kitchen

Many homeowners considering granite kitchen worktops are often weighing up the choice between granite and quartz.

Granite vs quartz cost

To supply a 5m standard countertop (600mm depth):

  • Quartz will cost, on average, £800

  • Granite will cost, on average, £850

Labour costs to install a countertop (per m²):

  • Quartz will cost, on average, £110 per m²

  • Granite will cost, on average, £150 per m²

It's worth bearing in mind that granite will need to be sealed whereas quartz is non-porous and easier to maintain.

From an aesthetic point of view, granite offers more natural variations, whereas quartz typically has more uniform patterns.

Granite vs laminate cost

For other homeowners, the look of granite is more desirable than its price tag, and hence a more affordable option, such as laminate, is often in the mix.

To supply a 5m standard countertop (600mm depth):

  • Laminate will cost, on average, £500

  • Granite will cost, on average, £850

Laminate installation costs typically average around £50 per m².

Laminate is more cost-effective than granite or quartz, both for supply and installation.

While laminate is great at mimicking the look of natural stone worktops for less, it doesn't have the same durability. Therefore, if your budget allows, granite is often a better long-term investment.
