Greenhouse glass replacement cost
If you have cracked or broken panes of glass, these will need to be replaced. You can have a glazier cut new pieces of glass or plastic to replace the broken panes.
Replacing greenhouse glass is very easy if your greenhouse has an aluminium frame. New window panes can usually simply be clipped into place. If you have a wooden-framed greenhouse however, the panes will usually be held in place with sealant or putty. The sealant will need to be removed before you can remove the old pane, and then it will need to be replaced once the new pane is in place.
How do you repair a greenhouse?
Wooden greenhouses can succumb to rot and woodworm, so they often need the most love and care when it comes to greenhouse repairs. Depending on the condition of your wooden greenhouse, you could see repairs consisting of:
- Replacing parts of the timber frame where necessary and restrengthening.
- Reconstructing original features that have been lost, using old photographs.
- Restoring the entire greenhouse by replacing the original frame with new timber.
Greenhouse maintenance
Greenhouses should be regularly maintained in order ensure that they remain in good condition for as long as possible.
Wooden greenhouses tend to need the most maintenance. The wooden frame should be repainted around every other year. Before repainting, you should always check for signs of woodworm or rot and treat any problem spots with wood treatment solution if needed.
Regardless of what your greenhouse is made of, regular cleaning is a must. Once a year, it’s recommended that you remove everything from your greenhouse and get rid of any damaged leaves, spilt compost, grubs, slugs and other pests. You should then wash all the windows and surfaces with detergent and warm water, both on the inside and outside. We’d also advise cleaning out the gutters at the same time.
Is it worth getting a greenhouse?
If you enjoy growing your own fruit and vegetables and you’ve been toying with the idea of getting a greenhouse, the chances are that you won’t regret it. A greenhouse will allow you to grow plants that aren’t normal to your region, and to move plants between indoors and outdoors no matter what the time of year. It will also reduce the risk of insect problems.
If we had to pick a few cons, we’d list the initial investment and the cost of maintenance. You may also see your electricity bills going up if you choose to install electric heaters. That said, the cons are few and far between! Take a look at our cost guide for greenhouse installation for more information.
