A gurgling drain isn't your pipes talking back - it's the sound of air struggling to get past water that isn't flowing freely.
It's usually a minor plumbing issue, but it can also be an early warning sign of something bigger, so it's worth working out which before you ignore it.

Why is my drain gurgling?
Something is preventing water or air from flowing through your drain as it should.
A partial blockage slows water on its way through the pipe, creating a vacuum and air bubbles that force their way back up - that's the gurgle you hear.
Common causes of a gurgling drain
Blocked drains
A blocked drain is usually caused by food, grease, minerals, hair, soap or general debris.
The blockage can sit in one specific drain or in a shared pipe further down, and where you hear the gurgle is your best clue as to where it is - for example, if it's only your kitchen sink, the problem is likely local to that pipe.
Blocked or damaged P-trap
The U-shaped pipe under a sink stops sewer smells entering your home. A blocked or damaged P-trap can cause gurgling, and while unblocking it yourself is usually straightforward, a damaged trap may need replacing.
Blocked or damaged vent pipe
Your vent pipe regulates air pressure in the plumbing system, letting air escape so pressure doesn't build up in the pipes.
Leaves, bird nests, rust, corrosion or rodents can block it. When air can't escape through the vent, it forces itself back through the nearest fixture instead - often the one furthest from the blockage - which is why you might hear a shower drain gurgle when the toilet is flushed nearby, even though the shower itself isn't blocked.
Blocked sewer line
Water from your home's plumbing can't drain properly with a blocked sewer line. This can lead to gurgling in multiple drains at once, and can be caused by anything from tree roots to wipes flushed down the toilet.
Even a partial sewer line blockage is a serious plumbing problem, and worth treating with more urgency than a single gurgling sink.
If gurgling is accompanied by a sewage-like smell, that's a stronger sign of a vent or sewer line issue than a simple local blockage - it's worth calling a plumber sooner rather than working through DIY fixes first.
Is it one drain, or all of them?
This single question does most of the diagnostic work:
Only one drain gurgles → the clog is almost certainly local to that drain's own pipework
Multiple or all drains gurgle → the problem is more likely in the main sewer line or the shared vent stack
A simple test: run the tap in your kitchen sink and listen for a gurgle in the bathroom. If the bathroom drain gurgles in response, a clog in the main line is the likely culprit, and it's worth calling a professional rather than treating each fixture separately.

How to fix a gurgling drain yourself
Identify the problem first
Listen carefully to work out which drain (or drains) the sound is coming from
Run the cross-fixture test above to rule in or out a shared sewer line issue
Clear the drain
Use a plunger to try to clear any blockage
If that fails, a drain auger (plumber's snake) can reach further down the pipe
Remove visible hair build-up directly with tweezers or pliers if it's accessible
Try the baking soda and vinegar method: pour in a cup of baking soda, followed by half a cup of vinegar, cover the drain and leave it to foam for 30-60 minutes, then flush through with hot water for 2-3 minutes

Like an indoor gurgling drain, a bubbling outside drain usually suggests a blockage in your plumbing system. Air becomes trapped and forces its way through the water, causing the bubbling sound.
If there's no obvious clog, the cause is more likely a vent pipe issue or a partial blockage further down a shared pipe than you can see or reach. It's a good idea to call a professional to investigate rather than keep plunging an apparently clear drain.
Plumbers typically use plungers for simple clogs, a drain auger (plumber's snake) for tougher blockages, hydrojetting for stubborn clogs like tree roots in sewer lines, CCTV drain surveys to locate the exact problem, and biological drain cleaners to break down organic material safely.
It can loosen minor grease-based clogs, but it isn't risk-free - very hot water can damage certain plastic pipework, so pour it in stages rather than all at once.
This is a classic sign of a vent pipe problem. When a vent is blocked, air gets pulled from the nearest available source - often a nearby fixture's water trap - to compensate, which produces gurgling in that fixture even though nothing is wrong with it directly.
A single gurgling drain from a minor clog isn't dangerous, but persistent gurgling paired with a sewage smell can indicate a compromised vent or sewer line, which can eventually let sewer gas into your home. It's worth having a plumber check rather than leaving it.
