Choosing between the types of window locks – where to start?

To help determine the most suitable type of window locks, you must first identify the type of windows you have. For example, do you have uPVC windows or traditional sash or casement windows?

Next, consider the window-locking features you need. Are you installing locks simply for added security? Or do you have young children at home and need locks for your windows as a safety measure?

With these considerations in mind, you can then weigh up the different types of window locks available.

Sash windows lock options

sash window locks and fasteners

Sash windows are made of one or more movable panes, or ‘sashes’. When closed, the top and bottom window panes meet together at the midrail with a sash window lock or fastener (preferably both).

A sash fastener is a more traditional style of window-locking hardware. These sash window locks are available in a variety of materials, making it easy to match your interior style. There are a few different types:

  • A screw pattern sash fastener (with a bolt and screw arm)
  • A Fitch sash fastener (with a half-circle-shaped lever and catch)
  • A quadrant arm sash fastener (a plate and latch)

One of the most robust types of sash locks for windows is a barrel lock. This is fitted onto the window sash, locking the sash to the frame to prevent the window from opening entirely. This type of window lock is operated by a key.

Another option is the sash window stop, normally fitted to the inside top frame of the upper sash window. This limits how far the sash can move up, allowing the windows to either be open partially for ventilation or locked shut.

uPVC windows locks

uPVC window handle lock

Window locks are typically built into double-glazed window handles of uPVC windows, with varieties in white, gold, or silver.

Simply turning the key in the lock, or pressing the lock button and moving the handle, will unlock the window mechanism.

uPVC window locks are available in a range of styles and measurements. A professional locksmith will be able to advise on the perfect fit.

For added safety, it’s also possible to fit window restrictors to uPVC windows – ideal if you have young children at home.

Safety window locks

window child locks

Safety locks for windows, window restrictors, and guards limit how far your windows can open to give peace of mind.

With a safety window lock installed, you can open your windows to allow fresh air in, but it would not be possible to fall from the window.

These child locks for windows typically either come as a concealed restrictor hook, a cabled restrictor, lockable or easy-release restrictors, and can be fitted to any window type.

Just bear in mind that window child locks provide safety, but not adequate security from intruders, so it’s important to have effective window locks in place too.
