Grey is one of the most versatile neutral shades but what colours go with it?

What colour goes with grey?

Grey has become one of the most popular colours to feature in our homes but what colours go with grey walls? It’s such a versatile shade that it can be overwhelming to think of a perfect colour match. We’ve got some ideas below that will hopefully inspire you.

Before embarking on a new decorating project, make sure you’re confident enough to execute it yourself. If you feel like you need professional help, get in touch with a decorator that’s local to you.

Take a look at our guide on what colour paint goes with a grey carpet.

1. Grey and yellow

Grey and yellow is a very popular colour combination that seems to come back in fashion time and time again. Grey can be quite dull and flat but putting it next to yellow creates a striking pop of colour that looks fantastic in any room.

Be inspired by the kitchen scheme pictured above and be brave with your kitchen design. Keep your floor cupboards grey but bring colour to your walls by opting for yellow wall cupboards or shelving.

2. Grey and pink

If you want to add touches of pink to your home but not sure how, combining it with grey walls is a great way to do so. Invest in a pink accent chair that will add a splash of colour to a living room or bedroom.

Create a rich, sumptuous scheme by picking furniture and accessories in a velvet or metallic finish.

3. Grey and white

Love neutral interiors but prefer to steer away from cream and beige? Grey and white is a neutral colour combination that sticks to cooler tones. If you’re not careful, this combo can feel quite cold and clinical so make sure to warm it up with your choice of furniture and accessories.

Introducing wood to a grey and white scheme is a great way of making it feel more cosy. Adding a plant or two always helps, too!

4. Grey and green

Inject some life into a grey living room by introducing a scattering of green. Keep the main elements grey such as the walls and furniture and bring in green through cushions, artwork and plants.

Plants work wonders and if you’re not the best at keeping them alive, cheat the system and buy artificial plants instead.

5. Grey and orange

Grey is the perfect base to let other colours shine. There are lots of shades of grey that you can go for, we would advise gathering an array of swatches (at least three) and testing them out in your space. You may see a shade of grey in the shop that you love but in the actual space you want to use it in, it may not quite work.

Contrast dark grey with bright pops of orange. An orange sofa in a living room will create a striking feature.

6. Grey and teal

Teal is a mix of blue and green and is a very stylish colour to incorporate into your interiors. Tone a teal sofa down with grey walls and a grey floor covering, whether that be your choice of flooring or a large rug.

Grey and teal is a beautiful combination to use in bathrooms as it gives a coastal look without being too obvious.

7. Grey and black

Neutral interiors don’t have to mean light and bright, you can take it to the other end of the scale and go dark.

Pair a mid-toned grey with black to make a big impact in either a bedroom or living room. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend this dark colour combination in a kitchen or bathroom as they are functional spaces that need to be practical. However, in a more relaxing space, it can be a real show-stopper.

8. Grey and beige

Rather than darkening a grey scheme with touches of black, lighten it up with beige. Beige is definitely the new magnolia - it’s a balanced neutral shade that is the perfect mix of cool and warm tones.

As grey is generally cool toned, beige is the perfect shade to warm it up a bit and make a room feel cosy.

9. Grey and red

Ideal for contemporary homes, grey and red is a bold colour pairing that would work well in modern spaces.

Take inspiration from this grey and red kitchen that uses red to make a feature out of the kitchen sink area. Alternatively, you don’t have to invest in a red kitchen design - use red accessories to liven up a grey living room or bedroom.

10. Grey and navy

Navy and grey is a sophisticated combination that feels natural and cohesive and doesn’t make too much of a statement.

If your style is more understated, then this pairing could be the perfect one for you. Keep your walls a light grey to make it more of a contrast with your choice of dark navy.

11. Grey and lilac

Lilac is a colour that we rarely see as a main feature in a room. However, if you’re a cool toned lover and the particular room you’re looking to decorate is south facing and has lots of natural light available, grey and lilac could be a wonderful choice.

Paint a lilac feature wall behind a sofa to create visual impact, or pick out lilac accessories that you love that will complement your space.
