What colours go with brown?

If you’ve ever wondered what colours go with brown when it comes to decorating, then read on for some inspiration.

Believe it or not, brown is a very versatile shade to use when planning a new room in your home. If you’re a fan of dark interiors but don’t want to commit to pitch black, then a warm chocolate brown is a fantastic compromise.

It’s tricky to know what colours best complement brown so we’ve popped some of our favourite pairing below.

1. Brown and taupe

Taupe is a delicate mixture of grey and brown and is a beautifully balanced neutral shade. Because it has brown in the mix, pairing it with brown leather furniture and soft furnishings is an ideal pairing.

Perfect for a minimalist-inspired space, this subtle neutral combination works well in a light and airy space.

2. Brown and pink

Add a splash of colour to a brown tonal space with hints of pink.

Be brave and use pink coloured paint to create a feature wall and contrast it with brown patterned artwork and furniture.

A pink velvet sofa with brown-toned cushions feels rich and sumptuous without feeling too grand.

3. Brown and orange

Brown and orange go hand in hand as they are both earthy tones. When you see this pairing together, whether it be in a home, a restaurant or a beautifully designed space it never fails to look impressive.

Pair orange-toned walls with brown furniture and flooring. Another great tip is to fill your brown and orange room with plants. House them in traditional terracotta pots and they’ll be a fabulous addition.

4. Brown and black

Contrast brown with black for a dark and dramatic interiors scheme. This colour combo gives off a Gentlemen’s club aesthetic and creates maximum impact.

Be daring and choose a black patterned wallpaper to act as a feature wall and contrast with a brown leather bed or sofa as a focal point.

5. Brown and green

If you want to incorporate colour into a room that you’re currently redesigning but aren’t the biggest fan of bright vibrant shades, then green is a great choice.

It goes wonderfully with brown furniture and flooring and creates a nature-inspired look.

6. Brown and mustard

Put together a sophisticated interior scheme with a brown and mustard pairing.

Both of these colours can appear quite muted so choose fabrics and finishes in textural fabrics. Velvet is a great one for bringing a sense of luxury to a room.

7. Brown and white

This may seem like an obvious one, but pairing brown with white will always be a hit. A white-washed room can easily be made to feel warm and cosy by contrasting it with wooden floors and brown leather furniture.

Take inspiration from the living room pictured above and paint alcoves a cool brown tone to complement an all-white room.

8. Brown and grey

Balance out the warm tones of brown with a cool grey shade. This jarring combination isn’t for the faint-hearted and should only be adopted by brave interior decorators.

Even though they create a stark contrast, it’s a really fabulous combination if you want a room to make an impact.

9. Brown and beige

Add darker tones to a neutral beige scheme by incorporating pops of brown.

Be inspired by this neutral bedroom and throw in some chocolate brown scatter cushions to add a layer of depth. Other elements of brown can be introduced through plant pots, throws and lighting.
