Costs by type of aluminium sliding door

Standard aluminium sliding doors

Standard aluminium sliding doors cost around £3,000 on average. This typically covers a two- or three-panel configuration with double glazing and a powder-coated aluminium frame.

Slimline aluminium sliding doors

On average, slimline aluminium sliding doors generally start from £5,000 .

Their ultra-thin frames maximise the amount of visible glass but require more advanced engineering, making them one of the most expensive sliding door options available.

What affects the cost of aluminium sliding doors?

Several factors influence the final cost of aluminium sliding doors.

  • Door size: Larger openings require bigger glass panels and stronger frames, increasing both material and installation costs

  • Frame profile: Slimline systems cost more than standard aluminium frames

  • Configuration: Two-panel sliding doors are generally less expensive than three- or four-panel systems

  • Glazing: Triple glazing, solar control glass and acoustic glazing all increase costs

  • Frame finish: Standard powder-coated colours are usually cheaper than bespoke RAL colours or anodised finishes

  • Security features: Premium locking systems and anti-lift mechanisms can add to the overall price

  • Installation complexity: Difficult access, upper-floor installations or structural alterations may increase labour costs

  • Removal of existing doors: Some installers charge separately for removing and disposing of your old doors

Budget reality check

Large sliding doors can span several metres, meaning the glass panels become significantly heavier and the supporting structure more demanding. Bigger openings often require stronger lintels or additional structural support, so costs can increase considerably compared with a standard-sized installation.

Why choose aluminium sliding doors?

Aluminium sliding doors are a popular choice because they combine modern styling with impressive durability.

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Slim frames that maximise the glass area

  • Large uninterrupted views of the garden

  • Smooth sliding operation

  • Excellent durability without warping or rotting

  • Low maintenance requirements

  • Available in a wide range of colours and finishes

  • Suitable for both contemporary and traditional homes

Alternative aluminium door options and their costs

If sliding doors aren't the best fit for your home, there are several other aluminium door styles to consider.

Standard aluminium sliding doors (patio doors)

Traditional aluminium patio doors (two panels, one sliding, one fixed) average around £3,000.

These suit openings under 3m where a straightforward sliding operation is preferred. See our patio door replacement cost guide for more on this option.

Aluminium French doors

Basic aluminium French doors cost around £2,200 for a standard double-door set. They suit narrower openings where a sliding track would be impractical.

Aluminium bifold doors

Aluminium bifold doors average around £5,000 for a standard three- or four-panel set. They fold flat against the frame when open, giving a full-width opening, but they need clear wall space on either side to fold into.

Our bifold doors installation cost guide covers this in more detail.

Top Tip

Standard aluminium sliding doors are often referred to as patio doors. They typically consist of one fixed panel and one sliding panel. Larger sliding door systems can include three or more panels and span much wider openings.

How long does installation take?

Installing aluminium sliding doors is usually completed within one to two days once the doors have been manufactured and delivered.

Straightforward replacements are often finished within a day, while larger openings or projects involving structural alterations can take longer.

Your installer will be able to advise on the expected installation time after surveying your property.

Can I install aluminium sliding doors myself?

Installing aluminium sliding doors is not a suitable DIY project.

The frames must be installed perfectly level to ensure the doors slide smoothly, seal correctly and remain weatherproof. Even small installation errors can affect performance and shorten the lifespan of the doors.

The glass panels are also extremely heavy and usually require specialist lifting equipment to install safely.

Replacement external doors must comply with building regulations and should normally be installed by a FENSA or CERTASS registered installer, who can provide the relevant certification once the work is complete.

Aluminium sliding doors FAQs

  • The average supply and installation cost for aluminium sliding doors is around £720 per m², although larger or premium door systems may cost more.

  • Aluminium doors have thinner frames, which means larger glass panels and better views. They are also more durable and corrosion-resistant than uPVC, and typically last longer. uPVC may suit smaller openings or tighter budgets. For a side-by-side comparison, see our guide to aluminium vs uPVC windows.

  • A straightforward like-for-like replacement typically takes one day. If structural work is required (widening the opening, adding or upgrading a lintel), allow two to three days. Bespoke and slimline doors are usually made to order, so expect a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks from order to installation.

  • In most cases, no: replacing existing doors like-for-like doesn't require planning permission. If you're creating a new opening or making structural changes to a wall, building regulations approval is needed. Listed buildings or properties in conservation areas should check with their local planning authority first.

  • If aluminium sliding doors don't suit your budget or layout, the main alternatives are uPVC sliding doors (lower cost, thicker frames), timber sliding doors (premium cost, more maintenance), aluminium bifold doors (fold flat for a full-width opening), aluminium French doors (suit narrower openings), or pivot doors (statement option for wide openings with a contemporary look).

  • Aluminium windows start from around £350 per window, depending on size and specification. For a full cost breakdown, see our aluminium vs uPVC windows cost guide.
