What do landscapers wear to work?

Not sure what to wear as a landscaper? Our guide to landscaper clothes will help you to determine what you should be looking for in workwear, and the safety gear and PPE you should be investing in as a landscaper.

As a landscaper, your clothes need to be hard-wearing and practical, so that you can work in any conditions. That could mean anything from dealing with rainy weather and mud to protecting yourself from sharp thorns or dangerous pesticides. It’s always worth investing in decent equipment to make sure you can do a good job for your clients.

What to wear as a landscaper

Choosing the right clothing as a landscaper is crucial for both comfort and safety.

When you’re working in landscaping, you might also need to handle power tools, dangerous chemicals and sharp implements. In these cases, landscaping PPE is also essential. Whatever you’re doing to create a dream garden scape for your customers, make sure you have work gear that protects you.

We’ll go into detail on some specific examples of what landscapers wear in this guide. But these are some of the key things to consider when you’re choosing what to wear on the job:

Durable and breathable fabrics

Look for landscaper clothing made from durable and breathable fabrics. These will help keep you working in both the warm summer months and the chillier winter season.

Look out for cotton blends, or high-performance materials that are a mix of synthetic materials and natural fibres like nylon or polyester. These fabrics can hold up through hours of landscaping work, keeping you clean, dry, and warm.

Tough work pants

You’ll need a sturdy set of work pants to protect you from scratches from thorns, rocks, and other hazards of the job. They should be made from a tough material that will hold up to scrapes and scratches, but still give you enough freedom of movement to do your work comfortably.

If you need to carry small tools like measuring tools, notepads and pencils, then pants with multiple pockets could be useful.

Appropriate footwear

Comfortable and durable footwear is essential when you’re spending long hours on your feet. There are plenty of options for practical footwear, but steel-toed bootsoffer added protection from dropping heavy or sharp items.

It’s also worth looking for boots or shoes with slip-resistant soles so you’re at less risk of trips and falls, especially in wet weather.

These Result Work safety boots are a great pick, with a steel midsole and toe cap for extra protection.

Sturdy work gloves

Most landscapers will need a solid pair of work gloves to protect from cuts and scrapes, and they’re essential if you’re working with chemicals.

Look for a pair that is cut and puncture-resistant, with a rubber palm coating for added grip strength.

Safety gear

If you’re working with landscaping trees and at risk from falling branches or other objects, then a safety helmet is essential. And if there’s a risk of flying debris like stones, gravel, or twigs, then you’ll need eye protection as well.

And, of course, if you’re going to be using power tools, then make sure you invest in the right safety gear. Check out our guide to safe working practices for more information.

Branded landscaper clothing

When you’re choosing what to wear as a landscaper, it’s also worth considering investing in branded clothes or a uniform. With embroidered workwear, you can advertise your landscaping business even when you’re working. It also makes you look more professional and cohesive.

Advertising while you work can be a key part of your landscaper marketing plans. Take a look at our guide to embroidered workwear to get more ideas.

Winter landscaping

Winter weather landscaping clothes

You might expect winter to be a quiet season for landscapers, but that’s not always the case! Take a look at our guide on what gardeners do in winter for ideas on how to keep busy and help your clients in winter.

If you are working in colder temperatures, you need clothing that will keep you warm without sacrificing mobility and freedom of movement while you’re working. Here’s what to wear as a landscaper in cold weather.

  • Insulated jackets
  • Layered clothing
  • Insulated work gloves

For example, these Result thermal gloves would be ideal. They are waterproof, windproof, and breathable, with additional palm grip.

Landscaper PPE and safety clothes

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential when you work in landscaping to prevent serious injuries, especially if you’re often working with heavy materials like wood, stone, and paving slabs, or using power tools.

If you’re regularly working with power tools and machinery as a landscaper you might need more intensive PPE. For example, you might be thinking about starting a tree surgeon business as part of your landscaping offering. But if you’re doing more work with power tools, you should invest in some more heavy-duty PPE to protect you.

From power tools to earthmovers or lawnmowers, a lot of the tools and machinery used in landscaping can damage your hearing.

But if your focus is landscaping, here are some essential PPE and safety equipment for landscaper clothing:

  • Safety glasses or goggles
  • Ear protection
  • Hard hats
  • Knee pads
  • No loose clothing or items
