First things first, you’ll need to decide on a space for your home dance studio. Most professional studios operate on the assumption that there should be around 25 square foot per student. But we don’t all have that luxury at home! At the very minimum, you’re going to need a space that’s 8’ by 8’ (assuming you’re going to be dancing alone) but obviously, the bigger the better.
Dance studio mirrors for home
No home dance studio would be complete without mirrors.
The cost of dance studio mirrors for your home will depend on how professional you want your setup to be. You can get hold of sets of portable, professional dance mirrors that can cover a whole wall for up to £1,400.
At the other end of the scale, you could just buy a standard, skinny mirror that either attaches to the wall, or that’s free-standing. If you’re looking to save space but you don’t want to drill into the wall, you could even get one that hooks over the door. We’ve seen unframed full-length wall mirrors going for as little as £10.
Home dance studio flooring
The cost of home dance studio flooring will depend on two things:
- Your budget.
- What kind of dancing you’re going to be doing.
Either way, this isn’t an area you can ignore as standard home flooring often isn’t suitable for dancing. Concrete could be hard on your joints, while it’s hard to spin on carpet!
Best flooring for a home dance studio
Here are some of the best flooring options for use in a home dance studio.
- Wood floor: Softwoods like pine are too soft for dancing, but hardwood is durable, long-lasting and versatile. That said, it’s not cheap so you might want to protect it if you’re going to be tap dancing by putting a practice mat down.
- Portable dance floor tiles: Portable dance floor tiles are a specialist flooring solution that snaps into place. They’re usually made from PVC with a hard-wearing laminate surface. You can also get insulation to put under them to dampen sounds, which would be particularly handy if you’re tapping!
- Sprung flooring: Permanent sprung flooring is the industry standard, which will likely result in the most professional home dance studio setup. You can buy sprung flooring specially designed for home dance studios in kit form. But if you’re after a cheaper and less permanent option, you could also make do with rubber tiles that can often be found in gyms.
Home dance studio ballet barres
Ballet barres can range in price from £15 to over £200, depending on a number of factors. When you’re choosing your home dance studio ballet barre, you’ll need to ask yourself a number of questions:
- How long does it need to be? This will depend on how many people you want to be able to fit in your home dance studio.
- Do you want one that can be adjusted to different heights? If it’s just for you, this probably isn’t necessary. But if you’re going to be teaching from your home dance studio, that’s a different matter!
- Do you want it fixed to the wall or freestanding? A barre that’s fixed to the wall can save space and make a nice feature. But if you want to fit more people, you might be better off getting a freestanding barre so that dancers can stand on either side of it.
Home dance studio sound system
Chances are you’re going to want good speakers to match your brand spanking new home dance studio. But when it comes to the cost of speakers, it’s a case of ‘how long’s a piece of string?’
To start with, think about what your priorities are. Do you want one that can connect to your phone? Or are you on the lookout for voice-controlled speakers? The latter will avoid you from having to run over to the corner to pause the music every two minutes!
You could see yourself spending anywhere between £30 to £150 for a decent pair of speakers.
Key takeaways
- Consider how much space you’ll need before you start.
- If you’re on a budget, opt for standard full-length mirrors.
- The best home dance studio flooring will depend on your budget and style of dancing.
- Invest in a good pair of speakers.
