Get the look: Alan Carr’s home interior cost guide
Be inspired by ‘Chatty Man’ Alan Carr’s modern country home and get the look with our top decorating tips and interior style advice.

It may have been a surprise to see ‘Chatty Man’ Alan Carr return to our screens recently as the host of ‘Interior Design Masters’ on BBC Two. However, it’s was a no-brainer for this funny man who has a keen passion for interior design. It’s great to see a different side to his comedy character.
In fact, those of us who follow him on Instagram have been able to check out his own interior style and design choices, as well as his adorable pooches.
Alan Carr’s House
Let’s take a closer look at some of his Instagram photos and have a snoop around his elegant country retreat.
Even from this one image of his bedroom (and his lovely Irish Setters), we can instantly see he’s created a cosy country vibe by combining calming natural colours. Soft creams and greys, with organic textures, like wood, wicker and dried flowers – perfect for a restful, rustic feel.
If you feel inspired by Alan’s soothing set up and want to upgrade your sleep space with a new colour scheme, hire a painter and decorator to add a new paint colour or wallpaper. The average UK painter and decorator day rate is £190, while the average cost of painting a medium-sized room is £400.
Want to add some traditional wood furniture to your bedroom, or perhaps hang country style curtains? A handyman can help you with an abundance of interior decorating tasks, even flat-pack furniture building. The average UK hourly rate of a handyperson is £20-30 per hour, but charges can range depending on their skill set and your location. For flat-pack furniture assembly, the average time taken is 2-4 hours, while hanging a curtain rail generally takes 1-2 hours.
Another way of evoking classic country style is by adding architectural period features, like wide ornate skirting boards, to give your space a refined finish. On average, you can expect carpenters to charge the cost of fitting skirting boards at a day rate of around £250.
A quirky office space
Bright, bold and confident, Alan’s home office design is a bit like his fun-loving character and includes a giant mural of himself. Well, why not?!
To recreate a similarly vivid office space that is sure to keep you upbeat and motivated while working from home, consider adding a gallery wall of vibrant prints, or paint the wall behind your desk in a cheerful, uplifting tone, such as sunshine yellow or sky blue.
Pops of colour
It’s not only Alan’s walls that are bursting with bright hues, his wall shelves also reveal interesting curiosities that bring pops of colour to the space. To get the look, add shelves to your home office to create playful, energetic displays of books, picture and novelty ornaments for a touch of fun.
If your space is compact or an awkward size, it’s worth considering custom built-in shelves that will maximise every inch of the room and offer oodles of storage and display areas. Naturally, the cost of having bespoke shelves installed can vary depending on the design and material used. However, the price typically starts at around £1,700 for modest alcove shelves to be designed, manufactured and fitted by a carpenter. For floor to ceiling custom shelf installations, expect a price of between £3,500 – £10,000.
So, whether you want to capture full-on country style in your home by redecorating with calming colours, or you simply want to add a nod to this charming look with a few natural textures here and there, keep an eye on Alan’s Instagram posts for more inspiring rural remedies and plenty of laughs along the way.
