From choosing and hiring a good tiler, to understanding what a tiling project involves, and weighing up DIY tiling versus hiring a professional.

Questions for your tiler

Asking the right questions before you agree to any work can help you avoid surprises once the job starts:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Have you completed similar tiling projects before?

  • Can I see examples of your recent work?

  • Do you have experience fitting the type of tiles I've chosen (e.g. large-format, natural stone, patterned)?

  • Do you hold public liability insurance?

Project Specifics

  • Will you prepare the walls or floor before tiling?

  • Will you remove and dispose of the existing tiles if needed?

  • What happens if extra preparation work is needed once the old tiles are removed?

  • Will you supply adhesives, grout and trims, or should I buy them?

Quotes and Contracts

  • What is included in the quote, labour only, or materials too?

  • Do you charge by the square metre, day rate, or a fixed price for the whole job?

  • Are there any extra costs I should be aware of, such as sealing natural stone?

  • How long do you expect the work to take?

Project Management

  • Who will carry out the work?

  • Should I buy my tiles before speaking to you, or wait for your advice?

  • How will you protect the rest of my home during the work?

Guarantees

  • Do you offer a guarantee for your workmanship?

  • What should I do if I notice a problem after the work is finished?
