Stress Awareness Month – Ideas to de-stress at home

Ideas to de-stress at home

Lockdown has reminded all of us that our homes are important. For living, for relaxing, and for socialising. We’ve become all too familiar with what we call home from spending more time there than we normally would. More time for us to think, reflect and even spectate parts of our home in finer detail. Now there’s light at the end of the tunnel, it can be intimidating to think about the prospect of returning to ‘normality’.

With it being National Stress Awareness Month, and as the nation takes another step closer to exiting lockdown and hopefully all restrictions, we wanted to explore the ways in which you can relieve the stress you may be feeling about returning back to normality.

It’s normal to feel apprehensive about going back to ‘everyday life’, so let’s take a look at what you can do to make your home an even comfier place to be in, in and out of lockdown.

Cleaning has a great effect on your mental wellbeing

We’ve been stuck at home, which means more mess and clutter than normal. That’s ok, there is support available to get your home into tip-top shape. If not for guests who will be welcome soon enough, then for your own mental wellbeing and health.

If the thought of cleaning up or clearing out your clutter makes you feel uneasy, then a professional cleaning company is the solution. Working in teams, a deep clean or clear out will be a simple job for them compared to you going it alone. The cost for a house clean may not be as much as you think either.

Find out more about your cleaning options and their costs.

Carpet cleaning should be high on the priority list

We spoke to Dr Dawn Harper, GP. Dr Dawn recommends our number one priority should be getting our carpets professionally cleaned. Whilst we may have been sure to hoover our homes regularly, it only removes surface dirt and still leaves behind the dust mites, bacteria and other allergens that can ultimately affect our health.

“The additional time we’ve all been spending at home means areas like carpets are likely to be dirtier than ever before. Getting a cleaning professional in is a sure-fire way to save yourself the time and stress of trying to do something like a deep carpet clean properly, and will give you peace of mind at a time when cleanliness is top of everyone’s agenda.”

Here’s the average cost of professional carpet cleaning.

Give your home a new lease of life through colourPaint a ceiling with a roller

Has being at home more made you realise that you’re not so keen on your colour scheme? Maybe there’s wallpaper that’s left you wondering, “why did you choose that!?”

Either way, a lick of paint can make all the difference to a room and your mood. It’s time to get creative, check out some of our decoration ideas, and find out the cost of hiring a professional painter and decorator.

Want a little more than paint?

Other decorative options that can really add personality to a room includes coving and skirting boards. They’re affordable to buy and have a professional install. Even better, they really finish off a room.

It may even be that you’re looking for something a little more specific, maybe to give your furniture a makeover? If you have furniture made of textile material then reupholstery could be a great option for you.

Embrace one of the best stress relievers – exercise

Home gym ideas

Exercise is a fantastic stress relief. Mostly any form of exercise increases your brain’s production of endorphins – the ‘feel-good’ chemical your body produces.

You may prefer to head outside for a run in the (hopefully!) sun. If running isn’t quite your thing, then why not think about building your very own home gym? We’ve got some awesome home gym ideas here.

If the gym isn’t your thing, then why not create a space to bust some moves? Create your own dance studio!

Create a chill-out or entertainment zone

Home isn’t just a place for living, it’s a place for entertainment and hosting too.

Whether you’re looking for your own space, or you’d like an awesome new space for you and family and friends, then why not consider a man/woman cave, games room or even a home cinema?

Don’t keep things bottled up, let out the rage!

I guess you could count a rage room as a form of exercise – destroying things isn’t as easy as you think. It is however a hell of a lot of fun, and it’s a fantastic stress reliever.

Why not build your own rage room?

Feel calmer by watching a tradesperson at work

I think we’ve all done it – hired a tradesperson and watched them at work, feeling a great sense of calm. After all, there are some really satisfying jobs to watch, with an amazing transformation at the end.

Cleaning is hugely satisfying to watch. Imagine a jet wash blasting away all the dirt and grub from your front driveway or back garden patio. If the jet wash picture is already getting you excited, check out the cost of a patio clean!

Other calming jobs to watch include hedge trimming & shaping, grass cutting, window cleaning, and more. Whatever floats your boat!
